Are there cheap flights to Nigeria? Well, the answer is it depends …. Nigeria like most of Africa is often left out in the steep price cuts and discounts that airlines offer to travelers in other parts of the world.

In late 2005 for instance, I paid $860 for a round trip flight from Venice, Italy to Los Angeles, California via Heathrow airport London a twelve hour flight. But a regular round trip flight between most European capitals to Lagos Nigeria usually a six hour flight costs the upward of $1000.

Even in the days of the defunct Nigeria Airways, travelers to and from Nigeria always have few choices when it comes to the choice of airlines and thereby the price they pay for it. Things are gradually changing though, let me show you a little ways you can get cheap flight to Nigeria.

Three things will affect your choice of airline to Nigeria and the amount of bargain that you will get. They are season, your destination in Nigeria and where you are flying from.

Ticket for flights to Nigeria is high during the summer season and the Christmas period. Even though Nigeria is not a popular summer vacation destination, the surge in global travel during the summer period affects prices worldwide.

Millions of Nigerians live outside the country and the Christmas period is the month of choice for them to visit the motherland. As a result there is normally a slight increase in flight tickets during this period. Your best bet to get a cheap flight to Nigeria during this period is to shop around and in Advance.

There are several established airlines flying to Nigeria. You are better off finding a low cost airline from your city to the hubs of these airlines and then fly from there to Nigeria.

Most international flights to Nigeria fly to Lagos, the nation’s flagship state. But there are an increasing number of flights going to Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt. The Nigerian domestic airline industry is improving so getting a connecting flight to any big city would not be a problem.

Couple of Things to bear in mind

  • Travel Time – Plan to spend several hours’ in-between flights, unless you are flying from the city that is a hub to one of the above listed airlines
  • Shop Online – Do your shop for cheap flights to Nigeria online. Though there are many experienced travel agencies arround, you can get the same deals if you do your shopping by yourself online. Some airlines, however do not accept credit cards for Nigerian bookings.
  • Shop in Advance – There are millions of Nigerians living in different parts of the world and millions more that flies out of Nigeria every year for business and pleasure trips, so flights fill up pretty quickly; so shop well in advance.
  • Buy Refundable Tickets – while this may not make economic sense at first. But the fact is that any slight event can trigger off instability in the part of Nigeria you are traveling to and you will be forced to cancel your flight at the last minute, then you would wish you had bought a refundable ticket.

  • Baggage Allowance – Please find out the baggage allowance of the airline you choose to fly. If you are going to be switching flights makes sure to find out the allowance for both
